Maui is not just another beach destination but offers a variety of activities sure to appeal to just about everyone. Here is list of our top ten activities to enjoy on this wonderful island:
We really enjoy the Old Lahaina Luau and think it’s the best. You need to make a reservation ahead of time as space fills up quickly. Be sure to get there early and take pictures before the show starts (and get drinks, which are included).
2.) DAY SAIL & SNOKEL TRIP TO ISLAND OF LANAI:
The trip sails out of Lahania. It is all day and you will be provided with breakfast, lunch and a wonderful cooked dinner on the island of Lanai.
3.) ROAD TO HANA:
Definitely plan a full day to do this 68-mile stretch between Kahalui and Hana. The journey takes you past jungle, deserted beaches and quaint villages. The drive will take at least three hours. Pack a picnic lunch and get gas before you leave. We recommend that you go to the local grocery store and avoid Paia (which all the guide books recommend to buy for food ) as it’s overpriced. Be sure to charge your camera so you can take lots of pictures.
4.) HELICOPTER TOUR:
Exciting helicopter tours are available to take visitors up and over the jungle for amazing views of the landscape and gorgeous waterfalls below. Some tours even venture to the top of Haleakala, which is the island’s largest volcano.
5.) WHALE WATCHING:
Humpback whales gather in the warm waters off of Maui to mate and give birth every year between the months of December and March. There are lots of whale watching companies that offer two-hour inflatable boat trips out of Lahaina and Maalaea harbors.
6.) ZIP LINE TOURS:
For the adventurous, zip line tours can be an exhilarating experience.
7.) LEARN TO SURF:
The beaches on West Maui are ideal to learn how to surf and there are a number of surf schools.
8.) SUNRISE OR SUNSET AT HALEAKALA CRATER:
The volcano is Maui’s tallest peak at 9,740 feet above sea level and the views are spectacular at either sunrise (which will involve getting up at 3 A.M.) or sunset (if you’re not a morning person). The colors of the sky above the clouds at either sunrise or sunset are spectacular in hues of purple, orange and pink. Either experience will be memorable. Bring warm clothes as it’s cold up there; and be sure to have a full tank of gas before heading out.
9.) MAUI OCEAN CENTER:
The Maui Ocean Center is home to more than 300 species of local marine life and there are “touch tanks” which are very popular with young children.
10.) HAWAIIAN SAILING CANOE:
The ancient Hawaiians island-hopped in sailing canoes. Three-hour tours that leave from the beach in front of the Fairmont Kea Lani are available.
